Teeth whitening

Whitening natural teeth with products containing peroxide or with a whitening toothpaste is becoming more and more popular. Given this trend, a wide range of products is currently available on the market in many forms, including gels, self-adhesive tapes, gums or mouthwashes.

The term "whitening" refers to any process that has the purpose of  making the teeth look lighter in shade. Two types of products are used for this purpose :

  • the products that discolor the teeth, which means that the color of the enamel is truly altered. Indeed, they contain peroxide, an agent that alleviates deep and surface spots.
  • the ones that do not discolor, which means they are composed of agents used solely to remove surface stains.

Whitening products containing peroxide

There are two broad categories of peroxide products : the ones that contain high concentrations of peroxide and are used under a blue light or laser in a dentist's office, and products that are distributed by dentists and are applied daily at home or during work for a limited period of time.

The temporary sensitivity of the teeth and the occasional irritation of the oral tissues are the side effects most often associated with whitening products.

Cleaning products

Cleaning products, such as toothpastes, gums and mouthwashes, contain polishing agents or chemicals to improve the appearance of teeth. They reduce surface stains by delicate polishing.

The official position of the Ordre des dentistes du Québec

The whitening of teeth is a safe therapeutic choice when performed under the supervision of a dentist and the recommendations of the manufacturer of the product used are respected. It may not be suitable for all.

It is strongly recommended to consult the dentist to determine the treatment that suits them best. People having many fillings, crowns or very dark spots in their oral cavity should particularly follow this recommendation. Any dental problems or concerns, including sensitive teeth, decay (cavities), infections and gum disease should be addressed before starting any whitening treatment.

And pregnant women? The Ordre suggests delaying the treatment of teeth whitening after pregnancy. Children under the age of 12 should not use whitening products.
