implant surgery and restorations
Nowadays, when there are one or several missing teeth in the mouth, the implant-supported restoration is the most frequently recommended treatment option.
The dental implant is an artificial tooth root made of titanium that is delicately inserted in the jaw. It allows to replace a natural tooth root and will serve as anchor for a crown, a bridge or a complete dental prosthesis.
First, after a thorough review of the health condition, a detailed examination of the general dentition with radiographs, all possible options to restore the missing teeth are presented. Complete information on the advantages and drawbacks of the treatment will be discussed.
The treatment consists in two steps: (1) planning the implant placement, and (2) planning the restoration on the implant.
The placement of implants is usually considered as a minor surgery. In our office, this step is performed by specialized dentist - a periodontist or an oral and maxillofacial surgeon. The majority of patients undergoing this treatment describe the postoperative period as similar to that of dental extractions.
Once installed, the implant gradually fuses to the bone, a process known as osseo-integration. The healing time varies, depending on the quality of the bone, the technique used and the type of restoration needed.
By the time the implant completes its osseo-integration (typically 3 to 6 months), we will custom build the prosthesis on the implant from precise dental impressions. Then, once the final restoration is in place, it should be checked regularly, at least once a year.
