Root canal therapy
The root canal, or endodontic treatment, is a procedure that removes the dental pulp. This soft tissue is found inside the tooth channel containing the nerves and blood vessels and can be irritated, damaged, or infected. The causes of such a pulp state include:
• the presence of a deep decay reaching the pulp
• a trauma to the tooth
• a large restoration
• a tooth fracture
In some cases, the root canal therapy is necessary before the tooth gets restored with a crown.
From left to right: (1) dental decay reaches the pulp; (2) the tooth is opened and the infected pulp is removed; (3) the canals in the tooth is treated and disinfected; (4) the canals are filled with a cement and rubber-like material (gutta percha); (5) the tooth is finally restored with a crown.
Symptoms vary widely and include:
• prolonged tooth sensitivity to cold and / or hot
• a pain during chewing
• the presence of a tooth abscess (infection, swelling)
To establish a diagnosis, several tests and x-rays are necessary. It is therefore essential to consult in order to detect the problem and treat the tooth properly to avoid irreversible consequences. Essentially, the endodontic treatment allows us to preserve the tooth in the mouth.
