Oral splints
The oral splint, or commonly called nightguard, is a customized acrylic device that covers the chewing surface of the teeth. In order to optimize the comfort, it is designed out of teeth impressions and is generally fixed on the upper teeth.
It is often recommended in the following situations:
• abnormal teeth wear (often related to teeth grinding, or bruxism)
• temporomandibular joint disorder (TMD)
• protection of numerous implant-supported restorations
Worn every evening and sometimes even during the day, the occlusal splint eases joint and jaw muscle pain. By covering the upper teeth, it prevents the lower teeth from coming into contact, thus reducing their premature wear.
